How to Add a Skill: Save a Multi-Step Task So Grok Bot Reuses It
Once a multi-step task works, ask Grok Bot to save it as a skill: a named, saved set of instructions that any of your Bots can reuse.

Answer first: Get a task working once in chat. Then say: "Save what we just did as a skill called <name>, including when to use it, the steps and the gotchas." Grok Bot saves it to your skill library. A skill is a saved set of instructions with a name and a short description, and it's shared across all of your assistants, so any of your Bots can use it. Next time, ask for the task by name, or describe it, and the saved steps get reused.
Test status: on 2026-10-17 I checked existing skills and confirmed the format: each skill has a name and a short description, followed by step-by-step instructions. Sharing across your Bots is how Grok Bot skills work, but I didn't test a second Bot running a saved skill, and no new skill was created for this page.
Who it's for
Anyone who repeats the same multi-step job (a weekly report, a site check, a file conversion) and is tired of explaining it again.
Steps
- Do it once, end to end, in chat. Correct the Bot until the result is right.
- Ask it to save the skill. Name it clearly (kebab-case, for example
weekly-sales-summary) and have it record when to use it, the steps, the inputs it needs and the gotchas you hit. - Read the skill it saved. Ask it to show you the full text. Check that the steps match what actually worked and that no secrets are in it.
- Reuse it: "Run my weekly-sales-summary skill for last week." Or put that sentence in a routine.
- Update it when something changes: "Update the weekly-sales-summary skill: the report is now under Exports."
Copy-paste prompt
Save what we just did as a skill named <skill-name>.
Include: a one-line description of when to use it, required inputs, numbered steps exactly as they worked, gotchas we hit, and what the output should look like.
Don't include passwords, API keys or personal data. Show me the full skill text once it's saved.
Expected result
The saved skill shown to you in chat. Later requests by name follow the saved steps.
Gotchas
- A vague description means it's rarely used. Write the "when to use" line around the trigger, for example "use when asked for the weekly sales summary".
- Never store secrets in a skill. Skills are stored as plain text, and all of your Bots can read them.
- Skills go stale. If the site or app changes, update the skill, or it will repeat old steps.
- Back up important skills (see Back Up Your Bot's Playbooks and Files).
FAQ
Do I need to write the file myself? No. Ask the Bot to write it, then review what it saved.
Can my other Bots use it? Yes. Saved skills are shared across all of your assistants, so any of your Bots can use them.
